It is with reluctance that I am submitting this letter. Although my time with the Association of Hispanic Municipal Officials has been, on the whole, satisfying and productive, for quite a while now I have become less and less satisfied with the course we have recently taken. The direction of AHMO and the new targets and methods of accomplishing them are making it increasingly difficult for me to feel that I am contributing sufficiently. I have enjoyed working with everyone and have learned a great deal.
Therefore, it is with regret that I wish to inform you that I will be resigning from my position with AHMO as President as of today. I regret any inconvenience that this will cause, and I wish you and AHMO continued success. I will not go in to any details, but if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me.

I had the privilege and honor to have met Mrs. Lena Guerrero. I was appointed by Gov. Ann Richards to a State position the same time Mrs. Guerrero was appointed to the Texas Railroad Commission. She will be missed by many. Our prayers and love are with her and her family.

My own opinion on this issue!!!!
State Sen. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston, and state Rep. Myra Crownover, R-Denton, said they plan to file a bill in the upcoming legislative session that would ban smoking in indoor workplaces, including bars and restaurants.
Here is what I think.
I don't think it is the business of state government or any individual to tell other individuals when or where to smoke. Owners of businesses should be able to decide if thier patrons are allowed to smoke in thier business. If you don't like the smoke, take your business elsewhere. One of our greatest problems here in America is too much government interference in personal affairs, up to and including finances. Our business is losing money and if the State of Texas wants to tell us how to operate our business and if it fails, they better be ready to bail us out. At the very lease, consider other options like requiring ventilation systems in smoking establishments. This option would require each restaurant or bar that does have smoking to have a special air filtration system. Our establishment already has a complete enclosed non-smoking section that can be you can patronize and it’s always empty. Most of the crowd is in the smoking section.

Jerry Morales wins the at-large City Council in Midland
We offer our congratulations to Jerry Morales for winning the at-large City Council berth in Tuesday's special election. The voters have now made their decision.
Morales takes the seat that had been vacated by former City Councilman Bill Dingus. Dingus resigned his position in order to be the Democratic contender for a seat in the Texas House against Speaker Tom Craddick, R-Midland. Morales will serve the remainder of Dingus' term, which ends in December of 2009.
Morales defeated four other candidates who threw their hats into the ring, but this race generally settled into a two-person contest as Morales narrowly beat John Kennedy by a mere 154 votes (1,917-1,763) in the end.

Charles Laws says those calling for his resignation are defending criminals.
Charles Laws, a water company executive whom local officials are calling on to resign, on Friday defended his decision to characterize a proposed detention facility for illegal immigrants as a "holding pen for wetbacks."
Laws said "wetback" is widely acknowledged to mean immigrants who swim the Rio Grande and enter the United States illegally, not American citizens. Laws said the term is not racial, an assertion that others dispute. He said he wishes he had not used the wordin an agenda item for the Creedmoor-Maha Water Supply Corp.'s board of directors but will not resign over it.
He said he thinks the politicians calling for his resignation are in effect defending criminals who should not be in the United States.
Laws was responding to condemnation that came Thursday from local officials such as Austin City Council Member Mike Martinez, state Sen. Kirk Watson, D-Austin, and state Rep. Eddie Rodriguez, D-Austin, as well as several advocacy groups.
They called for him to resign from his job as general manager of Creedmoor-Maha, which provides water to communities southeast of Austin. Laws' critics also called for him to resign his seat on the city council of Mustang Ridge, a town near the Travis-Hays county border.
The furor is over an item he posted on the most recent meeting agenda of the water supply company's board of directors. The company is considering a request to supply water to a proposed immigrantholding facility. On the agenda, Laws described the facility as a "holding pen for wetbacks."
During a news conference Thursday, Laws' critics accused him of "open bigotry," as Watson put it. They said Laws' language is particularly objectionable because his two positions allow him to shape Mustang Ridge policy and determine who gets water.

San Fran to Issue ID Cards to Illegal Immigrants
San Francisco will begin issuing municipal identification cards to illegal immigrants next year, becoming the second city in the country to create such a program in the wake of stalled immigration reform efforts in Washington.
The board of supervisors Tuesday gave the final OK needed to create the ID card program, effectively legitimizing the city's estimated 40,000 illegal immigrants.

He answered by saying, "Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders.
